He Says. She Says. (Why We Chose NFP pt 2)

Read Part 1 of “Why We Chose NFP” here.

My husband and I have practiced the method successfully both to postpone and achieve pregnancy. My husband says our friends think we’re like magic because we really weren’t using anything else. For two whole years we avoided pregnancy without any pills, implants, or barriers before we conceived our second.   I did try the Pill for one month and it really affected me physically, spiritually, and emotionally. I resented my husband deep inside, thinking, “Why do I have to change my body, and he doesn’t have to do a thing?”

This was truly a dark period in our relationship. It felt awful feeling resented by my wife. It was also hard to watch her suffer. I could tell that she didn’t feel normal, and she was constantly worried that the pill was harming her. After that month we knew there had to be a better way.

I know it’s different for every woman, but I personally experienced all kinds of side effects, and felt myself slipping into depression. And that scared me, because it runs in my family, so also for health reasons, the Billings Method really works for me.   Finally, what really hooked me into continuing the Billings Method is learning how alternative methods really affect the body. I learned that in many forms of chemical contraception, such as the Pill, a sperm can still fertilize an egg to become an embryo, but the contraceptive keeps the lining of the uterus as thin as possible, so in the case a baby is created, it can’t burrow itself into a nice cushy bed to grow and nourish. So essentially it doesn’t survive, and the baby dies. I think this is so important and it doesn’t get talked about! I only learned this very recently.

One of our close friend’s husband was extremely skeptical about this claim. He said no one ever mentioned this in any of his classes in medical school. Then he checked his medical textbook and there it was – a clear description of this mechanism in the pill and how it worked. He was so moved that he is now practicing the Billings Method with his wife.

So yep, I’m hooked and want the world to know more about it. Throughout this blog series, I hope to share stories that provide a sneak peek into the NFP lifestyle and its benefits.  I’m here because I want to share something that’s had such a positive impact on my marriage thus far. It is definitely not the only path to a strong marriage or only option for avoiding/achieving pregnancy. My mission is just that: to help bring awareness to another option for women and couples seeking a healthy, zero-waste, affordable alternative to hormones, implants, barriers, in-vitro fertilization (IVF), or artificial reproductive technologies (ART).

I’m a big believer in informed decision-making, especially when it comes to our reproductive health, birthing, and parenting. Regardless of whether or not you choose NFP, most importantly, learn your options, understand the risks and benefits, and exercise true freedom of choice in protecting your own physical and emotional health.  In the words of Maya Angelou, “The more you know, the better you do.”

  • Wow.
  • I too was that "good" girl and based my righteousness on my actions. When I did commit one of those sins you listed (as if I wasn't already sinning with my pride in myself) I went into deep depression because I placed so much weight on being "good." When I realized (like you) that He is good and my righteousness (actions) are like filthy rags it gave me a new freedom. I was a slave to my misguided perceptions and my so called perfection. Christ offered me a freedom based on who He was and not what I did or did not do. He loved me in spite of me. That for me was freeing. Thank you for sharing this post. Now I see that I wasn't the only misguided one...lol...I'm sure there are many more of us. I look forward to reading more of your posts.
  • I am in tears after reading this! This spoke to me! I can relate! Just a while ago my selfishness rose her head and placed pressure on an old friend to be my superhero. God is the only superhero! He is near ready to comfort! Lord you have spoken! May God Bless this ministry!
  • This is a much needed topic in the church today. I dont know whats worse these church floks that fill your head with lies or that christian mingle commercial?
  • Very wise words, son. Hopefully, they are listening with spiritual ears and a heart to obey.
